Pierced by Jess - Body Piercing - Frequently Asked Questions

  • How old do I have to be? - for getting a body piercing.
All our body piercings have an age restriction of R16 and some are R18.
And valid photo identification is needed, and will be checked for everyone.
If you don't bring ID with you, we will not be able to pierce you, sorry.

If you are under 16, you will need a parent or legal guardian to come in with you to sign your consent form. (both will need valid photo ID)

If we have stated/written R16 or R18 next to the piercing you are wanting on the piercing price list, these are strictly for over that age only.
We will not pierce you if you are under this age limit, even if you have a parent or guardian come in with you.
We have restrictions in place for good reason, and are happy to explain why, but mainly for your own safety, as we are here to provide a safe environment to be pierced in and provide you with a piercing you will be happy with for years to come.

  • Do you pierce by ''Gun'' or ''Needle''?
Needle only! - all day everyday!
Getting pierced by a single use - disposable needle is a much safer, hygienic, and less traumatic way to be pierced.
It also causes much less tissue damage, than compared to a ''piercing gun''.
An experienced professional body piercer will never ever use a ''gun''.

The piercing process with a needle does take a little bit longer, this is not a bad thing, this is so we can mark where we are going to pierce, check that it is right with you, and change the placement if needed.

Because this is a slightly longer process we don't pierce young children.

If you have been pierced elsewhere by a ''gun'' we are happy to help in getting you fitted with the correct jewellery. We have a large selection of
Surgical Steel jewellery which is the best option to be in the body, rather than ''hypo-allergenic'' sterling sliver or gold, as the body can react and reject these metals causing issues, and never allowing the piercing to heal properly.

  • Does getting a body piercing hurt?
Yes - No - Sometimes? usually not much, and it is over before you know it.
Every human body is different, and every piercing is different.
The best thing you can do for a happy and enjoyable body piercing experience, is come prepared.
Make sure you are hydrated and have plenty eat before you arrive - something decent - something sugary, to keep your sugar levels up, this helps eliminate the on set of fainting.
And as a rule, we will not pierce you if you have not had something decent to eat within the hour before being pierced.
Remember - the more relaxed and comfortable you are the better the experience.

  • Do I have to clean my new body piercing?
Yes! and we offer a safe piercing aftercare cleaning spray, made up of 1% Chlorhexidine solution. It is an infection preventer, and is great for keeping your new piercing and skin clean.
We pride ourselves on providing you with clear and thorough instructions on how to clean and take care of your new piercing.
Salt water is also a good alternative, but only if it is made up correctly, if it isn't made up right it can burn and dry out the skin and cause more issues. We can talk you through and provide instructions on how to make it up correctly.
You don't need to over-clean your piercing, just morning and night is usually fine, but if something doesn't seem right, please come see us.

It is very important to never use cleaning products like - dettol, meths, studex, or peroxide, etc and never use any antiseptic creams or gels.

Keep you hands off! twisting, turning and playing with your new piercing is the worst thing you can do, especially if it is dry. All you are doing is breaking the new skin that is trying to heal, and opening it all back up again, which can lead to nasty scaring or unnecessary infection.

  • What jewellery do I first get pierced with? - Can I choose?
No, sorry, you can not choose or bring you own jewellery to be pierced with.
We use high quality Surgical Steel jewellery for all our body piercings, and Titanium is available on request(+$10).
Both are plain silver in colour, and the initial ''healing jewellery'' is included in the piercing price.
The initial ''healing jewellery'' is always a stud/barbell, no rings/hoops. (except in some piercings eg. septum)
All our piercing jewellery is sterilized on site through our autoclave machine, and is maintained regularly by Jess.

The initial ''healing jewellery'' is slightly longer in length, this is to accommodate room for swelling.
It is very important that you downsize your jewellery to a shorter one, after around 4 weeks, or once the swelling has gone down. This is to reduce movement, and so it can start to heal properly.
If you don't downsize your jewellery, you are at high risk of catching/tearing your new piercing, as-well as that your new piercing will heal on a funny angle, or it will develop pressure bumps, and never end up healing properly. So please come back and downsize your jewellery.

There is no set size for everyone. Everybody is different and every piercing is different.
Jewellery comes in all different lengths, gauges, and types.
Understanding jewellery size can be alittle confusing,
but once you are fitted with the correct size you will be amazed with how it feels and looks.

  • Can my friend or support person video or take photos while I get pierced?
No, sorry, We do not allow videos or photos to be taken in our piercing room.
We also only allow one person to come into the piercing room with you.
When we are piercing you we are providing you with a safe and comfortable environment, and having more than one person or someone video or take photos is very distracting, and that can put you off as-well as the piercer,
meaning the safe environment can turn into a dangerous environment very quickly, especially with sharp needles around.
You will be asked to leave without refund if you or your friend continue to disrespect our rules.
You can take a photo when the piercing is finished, and the piercer has provided you with your detailed aftercare form.

  • What do words like Gauge, Length, Type mean? (Body Jewellery)
    Gauge
    - is the thickness/diameter of the post/bar the goes through the piercing hole, common gauge size are:
18g for Noses, or can be used if you like thinner jewellery.
16g for a wide range of Ears, Lips, and Eyebrow piercings.
14g for Tongue, Nipple, and if you like thicker jewellery.
We have a wide range of different gauge sizes from 22g nose jewellery, and all the way up to huge sizes when you get into ear tunnels and plug etc.

Length - is the size/length of the post/bar measured from one end of the jewellery where only the post/bar starts and measured to where the post/bar ends at the opposite end.
This is just a measurement of the post/bar itself, and does not include the balls/jewellery screw on ends.
    What about rings?
Ring sizes are measured in millimeters, by measuring the inside diameter of the ring, from one side across to the other.

Type - is the kind of jewellery you want. a Stud, a Ring etc. and is also how you like it to fit.
Some studs have flat backs, some have a ball at both ends, and some have a butterfly/clasp push on backing.
Rings come in different styles, there is horseshoe types with balls on the ends, hinge rings for easier fitting and removal, and ball closure rings that have a ball that clips in once fitted.
Nose jewellery has a wide range of options, there is the flat back that we use to pierce with and then once it is downsized and healed there is the options of changing to a ''nose bone'' stud or a curled/hook end stud, and there are nose rings in the hinge and horseshoe type.

It is all down to what you like and what you want - eg. if you leave your jewellery in for along time or if you have to remove it for work or sport.
There are soo many options, but it is just something you just need to try to see what works for you.

Understanding jewellery options can be alittle confusing,
but once you are fitted with the correct size you will be amazed with how it feels and looks.
There is no set size for everyone. Everybody is different and every piercing is different.
We have a wide range of jewellery, and have years of experience in fitting people with the correct jewellery. If you are unsure what is right for you pop in and see us or send us a message.
